Sony Screws Your Computer

Sony Screws your computer...

Sony installs a root kit on your computer with some cd's. Here's another link that explains it in a less technical way.

Sony Raids Hacker Playbook.

A very good explaination can be found here:

Security Now.

Download links to html, or mp3 explainations. They are below where it says:

"Sony's "Rootkit Technology" DRM"

Summary of why its bad:

This poorly written software unnecessarily employs classic rootkit technology to hide from its users after installation. It can not be uninstalled easily, it can be easily misused for malicious purposes, and it has been implicated in many repeated BSOD "blue screen of death" PC crashes.

Because it hides files with $sys$ in the beginning of their file name, its being used by cheaters. :P

Sony DRM Used By World of Warcraft Hackers.

World of Warcraft hackers use Sonys rootkit.

"Re-naming any file on your (Windows XP) system which is infected with the Sony DRM rootkit, so that it's file name starts with $sys$ makes it "vanish". Apparently it's already being used by cheaters in World of Warcraft."

Yes there's an uninstaller, but Sony makes it hard to get.

Now Microsoft Is Concerned.

"Microsoft Corp. is concerned about rootkit features in CDs from Sony BMG artists and is evaluating the situation to see if any action needs to be taken, a spokesperson said."
